English Department

All English classes on all grade levels will focus on the achievement of the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts that have been established by the New York State Department of Education.  Mastery of these standards will be assessed both in the classroom and by the English Regents Examination administered to all juniors.

Grade Level Expectations

The NRHS English Department has identified a list of focus skills for each grade level. The skills are organized by the areas of reading, writing and speaking, and listening and are aligned to the Next Generation ELA standards.  All students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the identified skills by the end of the school year.

Dual Enrollment Opportunities

Announcements!

The English Department is excited to welcome two new members:

Before her new role at New Rochelle High School, Gabriella Contreras, an alumna, has served as an interim substitute teacher for the English department. She also completed her student teaching with our very own Mr. Nelson! She graduated from SUNY Brockport with a Bachelor of Science in English Literature with a concentration in Secondary Education. At her core, Gabriella believes that every student is successful and deserves her support. She looks forward to meeting her new students as she will co-teach in the integrated ENL/ELA classroom this 2022-2023 school year.

Prior to joining the English department at New Rochelle, Kyla Rodgers worked as a 7th and 8 th grade ELA teacher in the Bronx, NY. During her time there she was able to cultivate relationships with students through her engaging classroom lessons as well as her work in after school extracurriculars. Kyla obtained both her Masters and Bachelor degrees at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut where she studied English and Secondary Education. Kyla’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of meeting students’ needs both academically and emotionally. It is Kyla’s belief that in order to foster a positive learning environment we must create consistency and a sense of belonging for all students. She will co-teach in the integrated ENL/ELA classroom this 2022-2023 school year.
