Ward School was a sea of orange on Unity Day, a nationwide event when schools focus on kindness, acceptance and inclusion in the prevention of bullying.
Students and staff wore orange T-shirts and, in class, read age-appropriate books that address bullying and embracing differences. These included “Spookely the Square Pumpkin” by Joe Trolano, “Just Help! How to Build a Better World” by Sonia Sotomayor, and “Enemy Pie” by Derek Munson, in which one little boy learns an effective recipe for turning a best enemy into a best friend.
October was National Bullying Prevention Month, and the third Wednesday of October is National Unity Day, a day founded by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center to pledge to end bullying and focus on kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
"I feel strongly that we need to teach our children how to get along with each other,” said Ward School psychologist Dr. Melissa Swift, who has been celebrating Unity Day for many years at Ward. “We live in a diverse world, and it is my hope that they can celebrate those things that make each of us unique, rather than pick on each other. Everyone deserves to be respected and this day highlights that concept."
“The teachers said it was a great day to start having and strengthening their conversations about community and what it truly means to come together and work as a team,” said school counselor Brooke Fisher.
La Escuela Primaria Ward era un mar naranja el 18 de octubre, uniéndose para conmemorar el Día de la Unidad, un evento a nivel nacional en el que las escuelas se centran en la bondad, la aceptación y la inclusión en la prevención del acoso.

Octubre fue el Mes Nacional de Prevención del Bullying, y el tercer miércoles de octubre es el Día de la Unidad Nacional, un día fundado por el Centro Nacional de Prevención del Bullying de PACER para comprometerse a poner fin al acoso y centrarse en la bondad, la aceptación y la inclusión.
"Creo firmemente que debemos enseñar a nuestros hijos cómo llevarse bien unos con otros", dijo la psicóloga de la Escuela Primaria Ward, la Dra. Melissa Swift, quien ha estado celebrando el Día de la Unidad durante muchos años en Ward. "Vivimos en un mundo diverso y tengo la esperanza de que puedan celebrar esas cosas que nos hacen únicos a cada uno de nosotros, en lugar de molestarse unos a otros. Todos merecen ser respetados y este día resalta ese concepto".
“Los maestros dijeron que fue un gran día para comenzar a tener y fortalecer sus conversaciones sobre la comunidad y lo que realmente significa unirse y trabajar en equipo”, dijo la consejera escolar Brooke Fisher.
